New AI camera solution from Siemens Healthineers gives nurses more time and supports patient safety in intensive care units

An advanced camera solution with artificial intelligence has achieved CE-marking and supports nurses’ work and patient safety at the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Rigshospitalet.

  • AI camera solution for intensive care units obtains CE mark.
  • The solution has been created through successful collaboration between Siemens Healthineers, the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Treatment at Rigshospitalet and the MedTech company M2Call, which is part of the Zibra Group.
  • Great scaling potential in Denmark and internationally.

The intelligent camera solution, Migo, was developed to address the challenges posed by the increased use of single-patient rooms in new hospitals for healthcare staff in intensive care units. In these departments, the requirement to be constantly present with the patient creates challenges for the staff, who often need to briefly leave the room to carry out other relevant tasks. The camera solution, which has recently obtained CE-marking, enables nurses to monitor patients 24/7 through notifications and live video streaming, benefiting patients, relatives, and staff. With Migo, nurses can ‘carry their patient in their pocket,’ potentially freeing up resources in a busy clinical environment. The solution is already in operation at the Neurointensive Care Unit at Rigshospitalet.

Created in collaboration with nurses

The camera solution was developed in close collaboration with clinical staff from the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care at Rigshospitalet, Siemens Healthineers, and the MedTech company M2Call. The clinical staff have been actively involved throughout the development process, with their clinical needs and patient safety as focal points. During development, user tests were continuously conducted, and feedback from healthcare staff played a decisive role in optimizing the solution’s functionality and user experience.

“The collaboration with Siemens Healthineers and Rigshospitalet has been essential for the development of Migo, as their insights into user needs, patient safety, and market dynamics have been invaluable in our work to develop the technology. The strong collaboration has also been crucial to our success in developing a product that has obtained the CE mark in just four years and can now benefit both healthcare staff and patients in intensive care units,” says Michael Lange, CEO of M2Call.

Great growth potential at home and abroad

Siemens Healthineers is the exclusive global distributor for intensive care units and is ready to roll out the solution.

“Initially, we are focusing on the Danish market before expanding to the Nordics. This product is unique and a natural extension of our portfolio, where we aim to innovate — including solutions that may not traditionally fit within our core modalities, such as scanners, beam guns, and laboratory equipment. We see Denmark as a key market for developing new technology that addresses specific challenges in the healthcare sector, not only in Denmark but globally” says Ole Nygaard, Head of Digital, Nordic and Baltic countries at Siemens Healthineers.

The patient in the pocket

The AI technology in Migo detects clinically significant, potentially critical movements and sends a notification to staff via an app on a smart device, indicating the detected movement and allowing real-time video access to the patient. This ensures that the patient remains “in the pocket” of healthcare professionals. Health technology and innovation are central to the future of healthcare, and as a result, there are high expectations for the solution’s scalability across Denmark and internationally.

M2Calls Migo rethinks patient monitoring in collaboration with Rigshospitalet

With the article “New helper spreading in Danish hospitals”, TV2 has highlighted the growing presence of innovative solutions (including Migo) in Danish hospitals. The article emphasizes the necessity of utilizing technology to improve working conditions and patient safety in the healthcare sector, which is more pressured than ever. We couldn’t agree more.

With its intelligent patient monitoring, Migo stands out with its intuitive user interface and features developed in close collaboration with doctors and nurses. Migo is an app connected to a camera that monitors the patient in the patient’s room. When the patient performs specific movements, the nurse is immediately notified and has the opportunity to see the patient through the app. Therefore, the nurse always has the patient in their pocket when they cannot be present in the room, for example, to attend to other patients or to run an errand in the medication room. By providing real-time monitoring of patients, Migo enables healthcare professionals to make informed decisions and thus ensure optimal patient care.

In collaboration with Rigshospitalet, Migo is now in test operation, providing a unique opportunity for validation and ongoing improvement of the solution. The feedback from healthcare personnel is extremely valuable to us. With this knowledge, we can further develop and adjust Migo to meet the necessary needs. The app represents a breakthrough in healthcare technology, ready to improve patient care and workflows in hospitals across Denmark.

We are very proud of the development of Migo and its potential to make a meaningful difference in the healthcare sector. Our team is greatly motivated by the opportunity to contribute to progress in healthcare technology while simultaneously improving both patient safety and healthcare professionals’ workflows.

Exclusive distribution with Siemens Healthineers

Siemens Healthineers is collaborating with M2Call, part of the Zibra Group, to distribute an intelligent camera/AI solution for monitoring patients in intensive care units. The solution has been co-developed with leading clinicians, specialists, and nurses in the field.

  • Collaboration between Siemens Healthineers and M2Call on the development and distribution of intelligent camera/AI for monitoring patients.
  • Intelligent camera surveillance and app with real-time alarms for optimal patient safety and workflow in the department.
  • New, groundbreaking technology for 24/7 monitoring – for the benefit of both patients and staff.

Expected CE-marked and ready for sale in the second quarter of 2023.

Siemens Healthineers has entered a collaboration with M2Call to distribute a unique AI camera solution for monitoring critically ill patients in intensive care units. The AI technology in the camera responds to clinically important movements and sends an alarm to the staff via an app on a smart device that shows which movement is involved along with real-time video of the patient. The project stems from the challenges that single rooms in the new hospitals pose to the staff in intensive care units in relation to constant presence with the patient, as the staff often, but briefly, have to leave the room to perform other tasks. The new co-developed solution allows for 24/7 monitoring of patients for the benefit of both patients, relatives, and staff, and can potentially help free up resources in a very stressful clinical everyday life for nurses.

“We are pleased with the strong collaboration with M2Call, a highly competent partner, on the development and distribution of this new innovative solution, which can not only be used in Denmark but also in the rest of the world. As a major global player in the market, it is important for us to be at the forefront of new technology that can solve current and future challenges in the healthcare sector”

says Ole Nygaard, Head of Strategy and Business Development at Siemens Healthineers.

Developed in close collaboration with clinicians, specialists, and nurses

Clinical staff has been involved from the beginning of the process, as it is their clinical needs and patient safety that have been in focus. During the development, user tests have been carried out on an ongoing basis at relevant clinics, where feedback from the healthcare professionals has played a crucial role in ensuring optimal experience and function of the solution. Intensive care patients must be monitored 24/7 and with the transition from multi-bedrooms to single rooms, the flexibility and autonomy of healthcare professionals have been reduced, which can cause increased pressure on staff. This solution makes it possible to share the monitoring of patients and therefore allows patient-assigned healthcare professionals to briefly leave the room to solve other tasks. The patient is “in the pocket” and this provides proximity at a distance.

“When we look at the challenges in healthcare, technology will be an integral part of the solutions. Therefore, we are proud to be able to contribute to the development of this new innovative solution, and thus help realize a great idea for the benefit of both patients and healthcare professionals. Our core focus is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, and this product is an example of how technology can support healthcare professionals and patient care. With Siemens Healthineers as a strong innovative partner, we have unique access to the MedTech market”, says Karsten Madsen, CEO of M2Call.
